Guided tour on Nørrebro

The area was rural mixed with small businesses (textile factories, breweries, gardners, stables, early industrial activity) until 1852, when the ‘Kommune’ allowed the city to grow outside the military fortification walls located adjacent to and inside the lakes. (the limits of the medieval city is still very visible on a map)  From 1850 onwards, developers build working class housing at a fast pace, in order to accomodate the migration from land to city, sparked by the overpopulation of rural Denmark (Thanks to the advancement of hygienic standards and medical science). The industrial revolution’s demand for workforce was thus accommodated. Many poor immigrants came from Sweden and were  seen then as a social problem, but the majority at that time were farmer boys and girls from Jylland, Sjælland, Lolland etc. They were also considered migrants.
